Job Description:


The role of The Australian Financial Review's Deputy Photographic Editor is to support the National Photographic Editor in driving the visual agenda in digital and print, by delivering the most newsworthy and engaging pictures each day.

The Deputy Photographic Editor, who is based in Sydney, must be well informed about the daily local, national and world news agenda, to ensure the creation and sourcing of high quality photographs and visuals from important news events and stories.


Day to day you will:

  • Manage AFR Photographic coverage;
  • Maintain a considered roster, with an eye to keeping a balanced and sufficient number of photographers with relevant skills to render the best visuals;
  • Facilitate the creation of high quality photographic coverage by understanding, communicating and briefing photographers effectively;
  • Closely monitor the news agenda to stay ahead of requests for news driven images, while also responding to the picture needs of the editors throughout the day;
  • Attend relevant internal news conferences, with a focus on finding the best images for digital and page one;
  • Be flexible to cover alternative roles when required which may include daily, evening and weekend publications;
  • Support National Photographic Editor in driving key photographic agendas in the newsroom;
  • Support the National Photographic Editor with daytoday commissioning of assignments locally, nationally and internationally, photo researching and gallery creation.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of picture sources, including outside agencies;
  • Photographic experience in the media;
  • Demonstrated organisational skills;
  • Deep understanding of the Financial Review and our audience;
  • A strong commitment to the quality of our product.
