Trusted Autonomous Systems (TAS) is looking for an experienced software engineer to collaborate closely with TAS, specialists in Robotics, Autonomous Systems, and Artificial Intelligence (RAS-AI), along with Defence partners, to expedite the transfer of RAS-AI technology into capability.

TAS, recognized as Australia's pioneering Defence cooperative research centre, is a leading R&D hub focused on delivering cutting-edge robotic and autonomous systems with artificial intelligence (RAS-AI) to facilitate trusted human-machine cooperation. TAS drives innovative advancements in trusted autonomous systems to revolutionize the ADF and enhance Australian sovereign capabilities.

Our mission involves nurturing a competitive, productive, and sustainable Australian industry primed for pioneering autonomous and robotic Defence technologies; crafting innovative Intellectual Property through targeted research and technology initiatives; and aiding Australian industry in evaluating and presenting innovative autonomous technologies through capability demonstrations.

Specifically, TAS:

  • Creates highly self-sufficient and resilient systems
  • Develops highly self-determining and self-aware systems
  • Designs human-autonomy systems that are conscious of human presence and context
  • Speeds up the deployable state achievement for trusted autonomous systems
  • Enhances scalability and decreases the cost of autonomous systems technology solutions
  • Provides education on the ethics and legal aspects of autonomous systems
  • Contributes to national policy and regulation discussions
About TAS Projects

TAS projects are driven by Defence, led by industry, and rooted in research, delivering sustainable disruptive autonomous systems capability to the nation. With a vision of 'smart, small, and many,' projects leverage AI, miniaturization, and innovative manufacturing methods to create cost-effective autonomous systems deployable at scale, resulting in significant advantages in mass and combat weight, ultimately enhancing maneuverability for commanders. Projects not only introduce game-changing capabilities but also comply with legal, regulatory, and ethical frameworks governing Defence, ensuring trusted autonomy in line with societal expectations and national/international obligations.

Projects foster sustainable sovereign Australian industry capabilities, bolster industry-academic collaborations, promote research translation, and drive change, equipping Defence with new tools to 'shape, deter, and respond.' We embrace a fail-fast approach, embracing calculated yet significant innovation risks in our initiatives, adjusting efforts, focus, and investments to maximize impacts for Defence and the nation.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will spearhead the rapid development of a common command and control system for Defence, supporting structured experimentation of developmental robotic and autonomous systems in operational settings, particularly focusing on an integrated common C2 system for multi-robot operations in the land domain.

You will collaborate with the TAS Chief Technology Officer Team and other key stakeholders, including Defence partners, to define the product architecture, development environment, team recruitment, and implementation plan.
