SHINE for Kids is the only national charity provider of infancy, youth, and family programs for families impacted by incarceration.

To coordinate the Alexander Maconochie Centre programs, you will be passionate about providing life-changing experiences to strengthen family bonds.

The impact you will have

This pivotal role will report to the ACT Lead and National Practice Manager, who will support you as you deliver programs to facilitate the bond between children and their incarcerated parent(s).

_Keeping Us Together_
Helping parents to improve their communication with their child

_Storytime_
Building parental bonds and literacy by recording bedtime stories for their child

_Facilitating InVisits_
Supporting positive family interaction through arts, crafts, and visiting area activities

_Ride By Your Side_
Working alongside volunteer mentors, transport children to parental visits and social outings

Your background could be in education, community services, child protection, or family services. You will be passionate about continuously developing programs to break the fragmenting parent and child separation cycle.

A typical day will involve

  • Promoting opportunities for young people to engage with their parent
  • Working with schools and referral agencies to identify families in need
  • Organising programs, transport, visitations, administration, and events
  • Passionately delivering sessions for parents in custody and children
  • Planning play programs to be: fun, ageappropriate, culturally sensitive, safe
  • Liaising with schools, families, carers, and volunteer mentors
  • Assessing risk, making assessments, and documenting case notes
  • Supervising rollouts: recruiting, training, and coordinating volunteers
  • Continuously developing networks with prison staff and communitybased networks

What you need to succeed

  • Education, criminology, and/or social work qualifications
  • Experience working and collaborating in a child servicesrelated field
  • Professional, warm, and inclusive written/verbal communication skills
  • Understanding the needs of diverse demographics (e.g. Aboriginal people)
  • Relating well to culturally or linguistically diverse people
  • Professional liaison: parents, carers, and corrective services personnel
  • Recruitment and training of Mentors for the Ride By Your Side Program
  • Clear Working With Children (WWCC) and Criminal Record (CRC) checks
  • A current driver's licence
