Assistant Director Policy Coordination:

Primary purpose of the role


In this role, your primary responsibility will be providing policy and coordination support to the Principal Advisor, the CEO of ARPANSA and Executive Group on matters relating to ARPANSA's interactions with the nuclear-powered submarine enterprise.

This includes strategic policy affecting ARPANSA's approach to regulation, licensing, and standards development.

The role will also coordinate across ARPANSA to marshal expertise to support discrete packages of work relating to ARPANSA;s role in the system of regulation for nuclear-powered submarines.

The job will work closely with other ARPANSA areas such as the Office of the CEO. You will provide expert advice to the Principal Advisor and senior ARPANSA leaders, determine strategic advice for the CEO. Your work will focus on research, analysis and judgement to manage complex issues.

The key duties of the position include:

Key accountabilities

  • Provide policy support to the Principal Advisor, the CEO and Executive Group on a range of issues relating to ARPANSA's engagement with the nuclearpowered submarine enterprise.
  • Liaise to influence key government organisations and partners, such as the Office of the Nuclear-Powered Submarine Regulatory Design, the Australian Submarine Agency, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation and others to ensure ARPANSA's interests are represented.
  • Coordinate and provide expert advice to stakeholders on matters related to ARPANSA's mission of the protection of people and the environment from the harmful effect of radiation as it relates to the nuclearpowered submarine enterprise.
  • Coordinate Defence and other government agencies interactions with ARPANSA and its advisory bodies including scheduling visits to ARPANSA, developing workshops, and representation at committees such as the Radiation Health and Safety Advisory Council.
  • Ensure the provision of timely and highquality advice including the quality assurance and preparation of briefing material, conducting briefings and responding to correspondence.
Eligibility


To be considered for this position, you will have appropriate qualifications or substantial related experience, which are appropriate to the role and duties of the position.

You will have highly developed liaison, consultation and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to cultivate and maintain productive working relationships whilst undertaking strategic or operational negotiations with other Australian and overseas agencies.


  • You will have an extensive understanding of government processes and possess the necessary nous required to manage sensitive stakeholder relationships. An understanding of parliamentary and legislative processes is beneficial. An understanding of regulation or technical nuclear matters is desirable. You must demonstrate the ability to undertake research and analysis to provide high level advice to senior management. You will also demonstrate highly developed written communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • You must hold Australian citizenship or possess permanent residency status leading to citizenship and be prepared to travel interstate as required. ARPANSA requires all new employees to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance as a condition of engagement. In addition, this role is dependent on the successful applicant being issued a NV1 security clearance.
