How this position will Make the Difference to City of Melbourne


The Urban Forester will collaborate across Council to provide Arboricultural advice and advocate for good tree outcomes on planning and building permits.

With a customer-focused mindset, the Urban Forester will use strong communication skills to negotiate good urban forest outcomes, proactively resolve conflicts and manage customer queries.

They will work with contractors to coordinate tree works in a timely manner.


The Urban Forester will have a strong understanding of industry standards and best practice to help guide tree management decisions.

They will have an interest in tree valuation, and use strong financial management skills to keep accurate records of valuations and tree protection bonds.


What you will bring

  • Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne Values accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence.
  • A tertiary qualification in Arboriculture, Horticulture, Forest Science or equivalent.
  • Substantial experience working in arboriculture or a related role
  • Welldeveloped negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Highly developed organisational skills with an ability to manage multiple, competing and complex tasks in a fast paced environment
  • Welldeveloped record keeping and data management skills
  • Local Government experience with managing tree populations will be preferred
  • Understanding of Statutory Strategic Planning processes in Victoria will be preferred
