An opportunity exists for a motivated and skilled Consultant Geriatrician(s) to join our Geriatric Medicine Department.

About the department:


The Geriatric Medicine Department within the Continuing Care Division includes services located at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and Austin Hospital campuses.


Services located at the Austin Hospital include an Aged Care medical inpatient consultancy service, Residential Care InReach team and the pilot program "Geriatrician Emergency Department Initiative" ("GEDI") which aims to deliver timely person-centred geriatric medicine review to the patients of the Emergency Department, to improve care, decision-making, flow and discharge efficiency, and improve referral to appropriate community programs.


The Community Programs offered include an Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS), Transition Care Program and the and integrated Health Independence Program (HIP, including Older Persons' Complex Care/OPCC), Patients at Risk of Multiple Admissions ("PRIMA"), and Residential InReach services, and Medical and Cognitive Research Unit (MCRU).

There is also an overarching Geriatric Medical Clinic, CDAMS/Memory Clinic, Continence and Wound Clinics.

  • Appointment period:Commencing Feruary 2023 until July (1.0 EFT) / November (0.2 EFT) 2023.**:

As the Sessional Consultant Geriatrician you will be responsible for working effectively and efficiently with multidisciplinary teams, and for ensuring the right patient receives the right care at the right time in the right environment.


To be successful for this role you must:

  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Hold a Fellowship of the [relevant Australian Learned College FRACP or equivalent
  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Geriatric Medicine
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working as a team member with peer medical, junior medical, nursing and other clinical staff to provide efficient, safe and quality care across the continuum, and
  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching, training and research.
