About QIMR Berghofer:

QIMR Berghofer is a world-leading translational medical research institute focused on improving health by developing new diagnostics, better treatments and prevention strategies, specifically in the areas of Cancer, Infection and Inflammation, Mental Health and Neuroscience, and Population Health.

Based in Herston, Brisbane and working in close collaboration with clinicians and other research institutes, QIMR Berghofer is home to more than 600 scientists, students and non-research staff.

About the Safety and Wellbeing Team:

The Safety and Wellbeing Team promotes the highest standards of safety and wellbeing of all persons working at the Institute.

The team provides training and advice in order to drive a positive safety culture and supports all personnel and management to ensure the Institute to complies with its work health and safety obligations.

Role Purpose / Responsibilities:

• Participate in the development and implementation of WHS improvement initiatives to reduce the potential for injury, illness and environmental harm.
• Investigate accidents and incidents; perform manual hazards assessments and ergonomic assessments.
• Monitor, audit and report on compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and related legislative requirements, and the Institute's WHS policy and procedures.
• Monitor, audit and report on compliance with fire safety regulations.
• Contribute to development and implementation of of programs to promote the health and wellbeing in the Institute.

About you:

To be successful in the role, you will have:

• relevant qualifications in WHS, with subsequent operational WHS experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education;

- demonstrated high level knowledge of the Work, Health and Safety Act 2011, Regulations and Codes of Practice and its practical implementation;
- proven practical experience in the investigation of incidents and the development of corrective action plans;
- experience collating and analysing safety data, preparing reports, and developing systems and procedures for health, safety and risk management;* ability to develop and foster collaborative working relationships with multiple stakeholders, including scientists, regulators, tenants, members of support division and students to improve safety and compliance in a large organisation; and
- well-developed organisational skills and proven ability to prioritise workloads and balance competing priorities.
