The position of Science Laboratory Technician is an important and valued position in the school. As a member of staff, the person contributes to the development of the school and its Catholic Ethos and follows the guidelines set out in the Code of Conduct document from Cairns Catholic Education Services.

Typical duties performed may include but are not limited to;

• Oversee preparation, maintenance and dispensing solutions, chemical mixtures and compounds, including known concentrations of solutions.
• Monitor and maintain stocks of chemicals & biological specimens. Maintenance and storage of equipment, replenishing of standard sets and purchasing new equipment/chemicals (assisting the HOD)
• Maintain a record of Science Department accounts and purchases in consultation with the Science HOD
• Remain conversant with safety procedures with regard to chemicals, electrical, gas and fume cupboard fittings
• Under the general supervision of the Science HOD, carry out Workplace Health and Safety audits of laboratories, equipment and chemicals and maintain relevant paperwork including hazardous chemical inventory, risk assess and dissection register
• Attend appropriate in-service/workshops regarding safety standards and procedures, and new methods of preparing and using experimental equipment, where appropriate.
• Train Science Laboratory Assistants and teaching staff in the use of new experimental equipment, in consultation with HOD
• Assist the Science HOD with WHS induction for teachers and demonstrate safety features of relevant laboratories to teaching staff
• Oversee installation and maintenance of WH&S labelling on chemicals and equipment and safely store and dispose of chemicals within legal requirements
• Prepare, maintain, organise, set-up and dismantle equipment and materials for experiments as required by Science teachers

• Hold a Working with Children Blue Card
• Be fully supportive of the ethos of Catholic Education
• Tertiary qualifications at Associate Diploma/Diploma level or equivalent qualifications relevant to the position may be required or knowledge, qualifications and experience that are determined as necessary to successfully carry out the duties of the position.
