The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) is an independent statutory office established by the Fair Work Act 2009 (Fair Work Act).

About the Team


The Industrial Compliance Branch is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Fair Work Act 2009 in relation to industrial action and workplace protections such as freedom of association, and industrial activity.

The Branch is also responsible for the design and implementation of specific enforcement and stakeholder engagement strategies, ensuring a whole of Agency approach to key FWO priorities and projects.

This currently includes the FWO's response to underpayments in the University sector.


The Priority Sectors and Projects Team leads the strategic work of the Branch including the design, implementation and monitoring of the FWO's approach to Industrial Matters and other priority projects.

The Priority Sectors and Projects Team works closely with Inspectors and Legal teams across the FWO to provide strategic support and guidance.


Typical Duties
The duties of this role include, however, are not limited to:

  • Working directly with key internal stakeholders to assess instances of non-compliance, develop investigative strategies and support the delivery of enforcement outcomes in line with the FWO's Compliance and Enforcement Policy
  • Developing, implementing and monitoring strategies to support a whole of Agency approach to specified FWO's Priorities
  • Providing leadership to the Industrial Compliance Branch with a focus on building capability and engagement
  • Developing and building relationships with external stakeholders including developing and delivering educative materials
  • Identifying opportunities for the development of work and system processes to aid the effective delivery of strategic compliance and enforcement outcomes.

Selection Criteria

  • Qualifications in law, workplace relations or investigations, or significant relevant experience
  • Excellent understanding of the Fair Work Act 2009 and the role of the FWO
  • Demonstrated strategic nous, sound judgment and awareness of internal and external environments and risk
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including negotiation, influencing, and presentation skills
  • A track record of establishing and maintaining strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated leadership and change management skills
