About the Opportunity

MFC is currently seeking a Senior Generalist Solicitor to become an integral member of our spirited Community Legal Centre. In this role, your expertise will be the cornerstone of promoting access to legal assistance, social justice, and human rights services.

Based in Mildura or Swan Hill, VIC, with frequent travel to the communities we serve, this role is your avenue to contribute substantially to the legal empowerment of those in need. Your mission will be to provide confidential legal advice, casework, and education, becoming a key player in our community's legal enlightenment and advocacy for change.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Fulfilling the nominated person's role in the absence of the Principal Solicitor as a senior leader
  • Delivering high-quality, free, and accessible legal service in the Murray Mallee region
  • Providing support, mentorship, and guidance to less experienced Solicitors and new grads
  • Supporting the Principal Solicitor and fulfilling their responsibilities in their absence
  • Engaging in legal advice provision, casework, and community legal education, whilst ensuring compliance with professional and ethical standards
  • Actively participating in the promotion and delivery of our Community Legal Service to remote and isolated regions

This is a full-time role working 35 hours per week.

Remote and flexible work opportunities may be available for exceptional candidates with significant experience, however, you will be required to spend a significant amount of time on-site in Mildura.

About You

To qualify, you must have a current unrestricted practising certificate and be admitted as a legal practitioner in Victoria, with a minimum of 3 years post-admission experience.

A current driver's licence is essential due to frequent travel, and a willingness to be accommodated overnight when required.

The following skills and experience will be strong assets:

  • Experience in a range of legal services including but not limited to Credit and Debt matters, Family Law, Civil Law, Welfare Rights, and Family Violence
  • Proven track record of representing clients in courts and tribunals
  • Ability to balance competing priorities and manage a diverse caseload

Our ideal candidate is a dedicated legal practitioner with strong communication skills, able to work well in a team. With an empathic, solutions-focused mindset, you'll uphold our culture of empowering the vulnerable in our communities and embody our ethos of community engagement and support.

This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity for passionate professionals eager to provide help and broaden their federal and state legal knowledge, all while enriching lives through our advocacy.

About the Benefits

In appreciation of your dedication, enjoy a competitive salary ranging from $84,979 to $101,007 plus superannuation, negotiable based on experience and level, alongside notable benefits including:

  • Relocation support and travel expense coverage for a smooth transition
  • Salary packaging of up to $15,834 tax-free, pro-rata
  • Annual and personal leave allowance
  • A 35-hour workweek in a family-friendly organisation, promoting an enhanced work-life balance
  • Mentorship opportunities with the senior leadership team to steer your career path
  • Continuous professional development and legal training opportunities are available
  • All travel expenses are covered to support the necessity for your on-site presence
  • Higher earning potential when providing leave cover for the Principal Solicitor
  • Real-world legal experience in a close-knit, community-driven legal centre
  • Wellness package, discounted fitness memberships, and a confidential Employee Assistance Program
  • Work and travel in one of Australia's most beautiful regions while providing essential legal services to vulnerable people in remote communities
  • And many more

Joining our team means you'll be part of an integrated practice, focusing on legal issues while the client's other non-legal needs are supported by our wider team. This collaborative approach ensures comprehensive support for our clients and a fulfilling work environment for you.

Furthermore, you'll discover a supportive and collegial work environment at our Community Legal Centre. We pride ourselves on a culture that emphasises teamwork and mutual support, ensuring every team member feels valued and part of a collective effort to make a meaningful impact without the pressures of a corporate role.
