About the Role

As a Trade Instructor, you will be responsible for the daily management of the inmate Work Detail. Training inmates in their roles, undertaking competency assessments and looking to support inmates work with trade training opportunities.

You will manage the quality of the work undertaken, maintain communication with community partners and communicate operational issues with the Centre.

Within this Role you will provide advice to community partners over project design and delivery and assist in sourcing materials and consumables.

The management and observation of inmate behaviour is an important part of your Role as a Trade Instructor. In this Role the behaviour of inmates within the community needs to be closely observed and reported. On occasion your judgement will be critical in determining who participate in the various community based projects.


You will play an integral role in assisting inmates in their rehabilitation by actively encouraging program participation and oversee their work and skill development.

As a Trade Instructor you work to ensure the safety and security of those in the Work Detail, the Public and other stakeholders.

You will also be responsible for providing reports that will contribute to the case management of inmates including the security assessments of individual inmates.

You will promote rehabilitation with inmates and their successful reintegration into the community through work and trade training.

A key part of your role will consist of report writing in reference to Community Project activities, workplace incidents, disciplinary matters, equipment damage and administration records.

You will also be responsible for managing inventory, conducting maintenance and repairs to equipment and ordering materials and spare parts.

You are a respectful operator with a commitment for the on-going rehabilitation of inmates working towards making a positive difference to the lives of the people in our care.


Importantly within this Role you will represent the Serco Brand within the Community and act as an ambassador with the work you undertake with inmates in the community.


Your trade and technical skills need to be developed and broad to coordinate inmate work activities across a range of projects and trade areas.

To be successful in this role you will;

Trade certificate or equivalent in Agriculture, Horticulture, Grounds Maintenance or a Construction based trade
Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, or willingness to undertake training to obtain Certificate IV in Training & Assessment accreditation (to be completed within the first year of appointment)
Certificate III Correctional Practice, or willingness to attend training to obtain Certificate III Correctional Practice accreditation within the first year of employment
Minimum 5 years post trade experience
Developed production and customer service skills
Attention to detail and experience with Quality Management Systems
Demonstrate a commitment to Serco's values and the rehabilitation process
Maintains high level of integrity and ethical behaviour
Knowledge and practical application of Work Health & Safety
Developed skills in conducting site risk assessments and the implementation of action plans to mitigate risks
Well developed interpersonal and communication skills
