The Opportunity


Applications are invited from appropriately qualified individuals (domestic or international) for a Sustainability Informatics PhD scholarship funded by Algorand Foundation, and Monash Blockchain Technology Centre & Monash Business School at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

Sustainability is an urgent issue for organisations, communities and individuals across the globe. Sustainable development requires an integrated approach that takes into consideration environmental concerns along with economic development and social futures. Australia is part of the Pacific Ocean family of nations. The Blue Pacific connects us, feeds communities, drives economies and is central to the culture of our Pacific family. We share the responsibilities and challenges of realizing the Pacific's vision for a region of sustainable prosperity. We support the Pacific's regional and global advocacy efforts for the sustainable development, management and conservation of its resources.


To understand global impact on sustainable development for the Pacific Region, this project leverages the power of Blockchain for enhancing sustainability practices.

With the advanced technologies underpinning our modern world, we propose to harness blockchain, in particular, the Algorand-empowered blockchain, to develop key sustainability projects and collaborations across the Pacific Region in different sectors.

This ranges from Environmental Sustainability such as climate change and clear water, Governmental Sustainability such as sustainable public services and digital currency, to Societal Sustainability such as supply chain and fintech.


The research team champion long-term sustainability and help fulfill our commitment together with Algorand to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through our research, education and community engagement.


  • M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Management Science, Industrial Engineering, or related fields (e.g., Economics, Financial Engineering, Computer Science)
  • Knowledge of mathematical modelling (stochastic programming and/or machine learning), optimization algorithms
  • Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English
  • Trackrecord of highquality journal publications
Scholarship holders must be enrolled full time and on campus. Applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.


Successful applicants will be expected to enrol by August 2023, but there may be some flexibility regarding the date of commencement.

  • A cover letter that includes a brief statement of the applicant's suitability
  • A curriculum vitae, including a list of any published works, conference presentations and relevant work experience
  • A full statement of academic record, supported by scanned copies of relevant certified documentation
  • A copy of the applicant's honours or master thesis
  • Contact details of two academic referees
  • Evidence of Englishlanguage proficiency (international applicants only)
