How this position will Make the Difference to City of Melbourne


The broad purpose of this role is to provide high quality professional strategic planning, transport planning and urban design expertise and advice to Council to give effect to its goals for the municipality's urban planning and development.


In doing this the Strategic Planner will:

  • Manage branch projects to deliver them on time, on budget and to the agreed quality.
  • Review and amend the Melbourne Planning Scheme to achieve Council's urban development strategies and objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members whether in a lead or a support role.
  • Support senior team members to deliver projects.
  • Undertake research and provide support to the branch regarding these projects and other strategic planning tasks relevant to the City.
  • Participate in programs for continuous improvement of the way the branch works to improve the quality and productivity of the branch.

What you will bring(Selection criteria)

  • Ability to demonstrate and display City of Melbourne Values accountability, integrity, courage, respect for self and others, and striving for excellence
  • Relevant tertiary qualification and experience in the area of strategic urban planning or a closely related field such as statutory planning and urban design
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in the development of planning schemes with preference for the Victorian system
  • Demonstrated understanding of urban planning principles and processes and an understanding of the range of issues impinging upon capital city planning
  • Demonstrated ability to provide advice and develop policy, plans and programs on the use and development of land, mobility and transport
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated project management skills in planning and resource management and ensuring delivery of agreed outcomes within budget and agreed timeframes.
