Summary
The Faculty of Science invites expressions of interest in the position of Casual Research Officer Level 7 to assist with research into the role of long noncoding RNAs in brain function, as part of a Discovery Project funded by the Australian Research Council.
Duties
- Carry out basic histological preparation of mouse tissues using existing protocols or developing and optimizing additional immunohistochemical methods and in situ hybridization method as necessary.
- Analyse stained tissues using advanced imaging techniques, including Slide Scan and Confocal microscopy.
- Perform molecular biology and biochemical experiments, such as RNA/DNA/Protein isolation, PCR and RT-PCR.
- Perform tissue sectioning and histopathology.
- Manage laboratory mouse colony through husbandry, genotyping and a range of molecular, cellular and behavioural assays to be characterized different mouse lines.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and records, perform quality control and quality assurance activities as needed.
Qualifications
- A BSc Honours degree in neurobiology, cell biology or molecular biology.
Experience
- Demonstrated organizational skills and a strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Excel and use of Internet resources for literature searches and database mining.
- Ability to efficiently conduct experiments following instruction and protocols.
- Ability to clearly and concisely communicate information verbally and in written form.
- Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct.
- Ability to organize time effectively and work under time constraints, meet deadlines and prioritize work.
- Ability to work flexible shifts (evening/weekend/holiday) depending on the demands of the research and/or laboratory operations
- Comfort working independently or with other team members as required.
Preferred
- Familiarity with mouse brain tissues/samples and molecular biology techniques.
- Comfort around animal handling.
- Familiarity with histological techniques.
- Prior experience working with mouse models of disease.
