YOUR ROLE IN OUR FUTURE

Fixed Term, Part-Time Role - 48 hours per fortnight (12 months)

The Parkville Familial Cancer Centre and Genomic Medicine Department is a comprehensive genetic service which provides diagnosis, counselling and support to adults with a variety of genetic disorders.

We provide multidisciplinary clinics for diagnosis, risk assessment and risk management, with a team of clinical geneticists, genetic counsellors, and genetic nurses, as well as committed specialists in medical and surgical disciplines appropriate to support that clinic.

This role is an exciting opportunity for a Genetic Counsellor or Associate Genetic Counsellor to join the combined Parkville Familial Cancer Centre and Adult Genetics department. The appointee will provide genetic counselling to families in Familial cancer clinics and adult genetics clinics at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Box Hill Hospital, Sunshine Hospital, and regional centres (Bendigo, Geelong, Warrnambool, Mildura). A minimum of MHGSA board eligibility, excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated capacity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team are required. Previous experience working in a Clinical Genetics service is desired.

Position Summary

The Familial Cancer Centre (FCC) provides a range of services to assist individuals in adjusting to and managing a high familial cancer risk. FCC services ensure that heritable factors are considered at every point of a cancer patient's journey and take the opportunity of a cancer diagnosis in a single patient to identify other family members at risk and to make risk management strategies available.

The Genetic Counsellor will work closely with clinicians, other genetic counsellors and associate genetic counsellors to provide genetic counselling services to patients and their families. The successful candidate will participate in patient care as well as education, training, research and quality assurance initiatives.

Essential Requirements

•Board Eligible and HGSA Certification or working towards HGSA Certification in Genetic Counselling (Human Genetics Society of Australasia)

•An understanding of the current genetic and psychosocial issues relating to familial cancer

•A high standard of verbal and written communication skills

•Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team

•Ability to exercise judgment, show initiative and maintain confidentiality in performance of tasks

•Well-developed interpersonal, problem solving, co-ordination and organization skills

Desirable Requirements

•Previous experience as a genetic counsellor

•Previous experience working in a clinical genetics service

•Computer skills – competence in Microsoft office

Board Eligible and HGSA Certification or working towards HGSA Certification in Genetic Counselling (Human Genetics Society of Australasia)

Key Accountabilities

1. Provide genetic counselling (telephone) to FCC clients.


•Patients have appropriate and complete information and are treated in a professional and sensitive fashion.

•Accurate genetic information is provided through telephone genetic counselling with consideration of the psychosocial impact.

•Patients are followed up in a timely and sensitive way.

•Patients are assessed for their need for further appointments.

2. Organise and co-ordinate telephone risk assessment clinics liaising with genetic counsellors and medical specialists


•Pre-clinic work up of families is complete to enable a phone consultation to proceed. FCC clinics start and finish on time. FCC staff are informed of clinic appointments.

•Information to health professionals is provided in an accurate and appropriate way.

3. Participate in quality assurance and research activities of the FCC. Identify and recruit FCC patients to research projects


•Patients are recruited to appropriate FCC research studies by identifying and approaching patients, completion of recruitment forms and notification to project co coordinators.

4. Attend meetings and participate in education and professional development activities of the FCC


•Performance review demonstrates attendance and participation at meetings, education and professional development activities.
